Operations 1-49
Use the Halt button to halt the Tru64 UNIX or OpenVMS operating system
when it hangs, clear the SRM console password (see Section 2.9.2), or force a
halt assertion (see Section 1.13). The Halt button operates like issuing an SRM
halt command.
Windows NT does not recognize a HALT, so the jumper on the motherboard is
set differently for Windows NT (see Figure 1–9). When the jumper is in the NT
setting, pressing the Halt button is like issuing an SRM initialize command—
the system goes through power-up tests (as shown in Section 1.2).
Your system is shipped with the halt/reset jumper set in the correct position for
your operating system. If you are installing Windows NT after you have
purchased your system, or if you are switching between Windows NT and other
operating systems, you must check your jumper, and possibly have it reset. See
Appendix A for resetting the jumper.
Using Halt to Shut Down the Operating System
You can use the Halt button if the Tru64 UNIX or OpenVMS operating system
hangs. Pressing the Halt button halts the operating system back to the SRM
console firmware. From the console, you can use the crash command to force a
crash dump at the operating system level. See Section 2.12 for an example.
The Windows NT operating system does not support halts on this system.
Pressing the Halt button during a Windows NT session will initiate a system
reset.
Using Halt to Clear the Console Password
The SRM console firmware allows you to set a password to prevent unauthor-
ized access to the console. If you forget the password, the Halt button, with the
login command, lets you clear the password and regain control of the console.
Section 2.9.2 describes the procedure.
