Remove the cell caps and check that the electrolyte is
about 10 mm (0.4 in) above the plates. Check the level
of all cells. If the level is below this, top off to the
correct level with distilled water.
If the ambient temperature is below freezing, the
engine should be run for a while before topping the
battery off with distilled water . The electrolyte can
otherwise freeze.
Check that the ventilation holes in the cell covers are
not blocked and refit the covers.
Discard used batteries properly. Batteries contain
lead, which is harmful to the environment.

machine, disconnect the battery ground cable and
then all electrical connections to the alternator.
