Do not add the sample while the cartridge is warming up. Wait until
a prompt appears on the screen instructing you to add the sample.
By default, a message

flashes on the
screen and a single beeping sound can be heard which signals that
the blood sample can now be added to the cartridge.
Step 14:
When the message
Add 100 µL sample and wait
appears on the screen,
use the fixed volume pipette and the pipette tip supplied with the cartridge to
add 100 µL of diluted blood to the cartridge’s sample well.
i
Be sure to fill the sample well with at least 100 µL diluted blood.
The measurement starts automatically as soon as the sample is
detected. The test progress is shown on the screen. Measurement
takes approximately 5 minutes. If the Analyzer alerts you that an
insufficient amount of sample was placed into the sample well, repeat
the measurement with a new cartridge. Touch

Blood Typing in Cats
Cat blood groups are classied using the A, B, AB blood
type system. This blood typing system denes three
blood types based on the presence of specic inherited
antigens at the surface of the red blood cells.
Type A is the most frequent blood type. About 80 % of
all cats are Type A and about 19 % are Type B. Type AB
cats are extremely rare. The frequency of the dierent
blood types does vary with geographical region and
breed. In the context of transfusion, it is very important
to know the blood type of the donor as well as the
recipient animal as transfusion with an incompatible
blood type can cause sensitization or severe heamolytic
reactions.
The Element COAG™ Feline Blood Typing Test uses
antibodies specic to the A and B antigens to deter-
mine the presence of each antigen at the surface of the
blood cells in a sample.

The result of the Element COAG™ Feline Blood Typ-
ing Test is shown below
B positive
Safe Blood Donation
A positive cats can only be transfused with
blood from a Type A donor without risk of
sensitization or hemolytic reactions. Blood from
A positive donors can be donated to Type A
recipient cats. In some cases, only the red blood
cells from an A positive cat could be transfused
to an AB cat.
A & B positive cats can be transfused with blood
from an AB cat without risk of sensitization or
hemolytic reactions. In some cases, transfusion
of red blood cells from an A positive cat to an
AB cat is possible. Blood from AB cats should
only be donated to other cats with a similar
blood type.
B positive cats can only be transfused with
blood from a Type B donor without risk of sensi-
tization or hemolytic reactions. Blood from Type
B positive donors can only be donated to Type B
recipient cats.
