17 Read-only format Set when a “read-only,” formatted tape
is loaded into the drive. The flag is
cleared when the cartridge is removed
from the drive.

18 Tape directory

Set when the tape drive detects that the
directory has been corrupted. The flag
is cleared when the cartridge is
removed from the drive.
Operator action required. Re-read all
data from the tape to rebuild the
cartridge directory.
19 Nearing media life Set when the tape cartridge is nearing
its specified end of life. It is cleared
when the cartridge is removed from the
drive.
Copy the data to another tape cartridge,
and replace the tape cartridge.
20 Clean now Set when the tape drive detects that it
needs cleaning.
Clean the tape drive.
21 Clean periodic Set when the tape drive detects that it
needs routine cleaning.
Clean the tape drive as soon as possible.
The drive can continue to operate, but
you should clean it soon.
22 Expired cleaning media Set when the tape drive detects a
cleaning cartridge that has expired. It is
cleared when a valid cleaning cartridge
is loaded.
Replace the cleaning cartridge.
23 Invalid cleaning
cartridge
Set when the drive expects a cleaning
cartridge to be loaded and the loaded
cartridge is not a cleaning cartridge.
Use a valid cleaning cartridge.
25 Dual-port interface
error
Set when a redundant Fibre interface
port on the tape drive failed.
Replace the faulty component.
26 Cooling fan failure Set when a tape drive or power supply
cooling fan failed.

27 Power supply Set when a power supply failed. Replace the power supply unit. See
“Replacing a Power Supply Unit” on

30 Hardware A Set when a hardware failure occurred
that requires a drive reset to recover.
Reset the drive.
31 Hardware B Set when the tape drive fails its internal
Power-On Self-Tests (POSTs), and is not
cleared until the drive is powered OFF.
Cycle the power and try again.
32 Interface Set when the tape drive detects a
problem with the Fibre Channel or
RS-232 interface. It is cleared when the
drive is powered OFF.
Cycle the power and try again.
33 Eject media Set when a failure occurs that requires
the tape cartridge to be ejected from the
drive and retried. The flag is cleared
when the cartridge is removed from the
drive.
Try different media.
Run drive diagnostic tests.
