IDS Base Station Receiver 400 700-179-02B Issued January 2009 28
After this, the heart beat will continue to be sent at the selected period, default every 30 seconds
(see paragraph 4.6.10 Heart Beat Period M422), to the monitoring program until an
acknowledgement is received.
When an acknowledgement is received, the event above and all others received during the
“Comms Absent” period will be sent to the monitoring program and a “Comms Restored”
condition is issued.
To test the serial port, run a terminal emulator program on another PC with a known working serial
interface. Set the terminal emulator to the IDS BSR400 baud rate; see 4.6 Serial Output Setup M400. If
the output from the IDS BSR400 (input to the PC) is “OK”, the standard handshake sequence will appear
on the terminal emulator screen, see 4.6.3 Heart Beat (Poll) Date/Pre/Post M413.
NOTE:
The record termination character [DC4] will not be visible.

Type in an acknowledgement by holding down the Cntl key and pressing the “F” key, if the input to the
IDS BSR400 (output from the PC) is “OK” and there are serial events in the event log, the IDS BSR400 will
output these serial events to the terminal emulator - acknowledge each output sequence.
If there are no events then use the 4.6.2 Enable Serial M411 event log output facility to send events in the
log to the terminal emulator, acknowledge each output sequence.
NOTE:
See 4.3.7 Format Options M107 to enable/disable the COMMS ABSENT/Restoral event being printing
and outputting to the monitoring program.

Printer Error
This occurs when the IDS BSR400 printer is enabled and the control card detects an error condition on
the interface. This usually occurs when the paper runs out. If this is not the case, test the printer on
another PC to determine if the fault is with the printer or the IDS BSR400 interface.

When there is no line card activity the line card or cards are polled at approximately 20 second intervals.
