AIR CLEANER 4.41
GENERAL
The air cleaner prevents foreign material from entering the
carburetor and engine by trapping airborne dust and dirt in
the filter element.
Service air cleaner filter element every 5000 miles (8000 km)
or more often if the motorcycle is run in a dusty environment.
See 1.18 AIR CLEANER for more information.
REMOVAL
CAUTION
Do not run engine without filter element in place. Debris
could be drawn into the engine causing damage.
1. See Figure 4-102. Remove both front screws and nylon
washers (2).
2. Remove bolt and washer holding right fairing lower to
bracket on swingarm/drive support.
3. Remove both rear screws and nylon washers (1).
Remove cover (3) and fairing lower if present.
4. To separate air cleaner cover from right fairing lower,
remove two mounting bolts and washers.
5. See Figure 4-103. Remove two bolts and washers (3) from
filter box (2). Slide filter box forward, away from snorkel (1).
6. If inspecting filter element, see 1.18 AIR CLEANER.
7. See Figure 4-104. Disconnect hoses.
a. Detach breather tee (4) from rear breather hose (1).
b. Detach front breather hose (3) from front breather
bolt (2).
8. Before the snorkel is removed, detach IAT sensor.
a. See Figure 4-105. Press the catch on the intake air
temperature (IAT) sensor.
b. While holding catch, remove sensor from the snor-
kel by pulling upward.
9. See Figure 4-106. Remove two screws (1) and snorkel
plate (2). Remove snorkel (3).
10. Before the backplate is removed, unseat the IAT sensor
wiring grommet from the backplate. Gently pull the IAT
sensor wiring through the backplate
11. Detach backplate.
a. See Figure 4-107. Remove nuts (2) and bolts (1)
from front mount.
b. See Figure 4-108. Remove spacer screw (2) and
spacer and gasket (1).
c. Remove front breather bolt (4).
d. Pull backplate (5) away from motorcycle and rear
breather hose (3). On California models, slide fresh
air inlet hose from carbon canister through backplate.
e. Remove breather gasket from backplate.
