Users should be aware of general laser warnings, precautions,
and adverse effects listed in General Information in this chapter.
The laser is indicated in procedures where color-specific absorption, small
spot size, and high power densities are required. The laser beam may be
used to photocoagulate, vaporize, or cut tissue by utilizing the appropriate
beam delivery accessory and varying spot size, output power, and pulse
duration.

● The laser has been shown to achieve satisfactory results in

● One investigator reported that the laser was not indicated in the
removal or vaporization of cortical bone or dense bone as found in
obliterative otosclerosis

● Uninflamed mastoid cases, such as endolymphatic sac surgery and
cochlear implants do not benefit from the laser.
● The laser is indicated in both micro- and macro-otologic procedures.
● The selective absorption of the laser wavelength by color permits the
surgeon to work on closely-approximated soft tissue which is colored
red, but the laser is reflected and/or transmitted by adjacent non-red
tissue.
● The laser may be used for procedures done in the hospital for in-
patient or out-patient procedures. The use of the laser is not a
