CAUTION
Transmission damage can result from
extended operation at low uid level
conditions.
NOTE
Do not overll the transmission.
Overheating, oil foaming out of the
breather, and power loss may occur if
driven while transmission is overlled.
Only use uids meeting Allison
Transmission specication TES 295 or
TES 389 in the transmission. For a list of
currently approved transmission uids,
go to the Allison Transmission web site
at: www.allisontransmission.com, select
SERVICE, Fluids.
Allison Transmission recommends the
following into consideration when
selecting the appropriate uid type for
your transmission:
• Fluids meeting specication TES 295
are preferred over TES 389 uids for use
in all 3000 and 4000 Product Families
transmission applications.
• TES 295 uids are fully qualied for
Severe Duty and Extended Drain
intervals.
• A TES 295 uid allows you to operate
at a lower ambient temperature than a
TES 389 type uid. For transmission oil
temperatures refer to Transmission
Temperature section.
• A TES 389 uid is the minimum uid
requirement approved for use in 3000
and 4000 Product Families
transmissions.
• To extend the TES 389 uid drain
intervals beyond the recommended
mileage or hours change interval, use a
uid analysis program.
• When choosing a uid type to use,
consider what the minimum uid
operating temperature of the uid will be
based on the ambient temperatures
reached in the geographical location for
the vehicle.
Even though transmission uid is not
consumed during transmission
operations engine oil might be, periodic
uid level checks should be made prior
to placing the vehicle in service or just
after returning from service. Periodic
uid level checks help prevent
mechanical failure of a vehicle or
transmission component. Periodic
checks also help to detect uid leaks,
cooler failure (contaminating the
transmission uid), uid overll, uid
underll or the wrong kind of uid used
the last time the transmission was
serviced.
Check the transmission uid level using
the dipstick. The dipstick is marked with
temperature bands for a COLD and HOT
uid level check. The uid check marked
COLD is designed to allow the uid level
to be checked from 16° C (61° F) to 60°
C (140° F).
There are two temperature bands
marked on the dipstick to allow for
