Shaft relative expansion
PROCESSING MODES AND APPLICATIONS
7.9 Shaft relative expansion
In larger, high-temperature machines, the temperature difference between the rotor and the
housing (stator) leads to relative expansion between these two elements. This may cause
problems (for example, retaining clearances), which is why a shaft relative expansion
measuring system is recommended for such machines.
The relative expansion value can be several tens of millimetres, which is beyond the
measuring range of a single proximity probe. For this reason, Meggitt Sensing Systems’
Vibro-Meter product line offers four types of measurement systems that offer an extended
measuring range. Three of these use a double sensor arrangement which can be easily
processed by a single MPC4 card configured for dual channel processing. The various probe
configurations and their related mathematical functions are described in this section.
