7.1.3 Transportation

In the United States, large lithium ion battery shipments (more than 24 cells or 12 batteries

per package) are regulated as hazardous material (Class 9) by the Federal Government and

are subject to the regulations described in the following:

i Code of Federal Regulations, Title 49 Transportation

i International Air Transport Association (IATA)

Batteries can be ground shipped only if all of the following conditions are met:

i Box used meets the 1.2 m drop test box (“UN” rated box) for packaging

i Battery pack terminals are protected to prevent a short circuit

i Gross weight does not exceed 30 kg (66 pounds)

i Outer package is labeled with the current required label. An example is shown in the

following figure.

Batteries can be air shipped only if all of the following conditions are met:

i Box used meets the 1.2 m drop test box (“UN” rated box) for packaging

i Maximum weight of each package does not exceed 10 kg (22 lbs)

i Battery pack terminals are protected to prevent a short circuit
