5. Installation
5.8 Lens shift and offset matrix
Adjusting the horizontal and vertical position of the image
Ideally in any ins tallation the p rojector is positioned totally perpendicular to the screen to ensure a wholly rectangular im age. How-
ever, physical limitations mean that this is not always possible to do and the result is a trapezoidal effect upon the displayed image.
One w ay to correct this is by adjusting, or shifting, the vertical or horizontal position of the image.
The amoun t of available vertical or horizontal offset is dependent on wh at type o f lens is installed in the projector and the projector
resolution, see im age 5-9 which illustrates the vertical offset values of an image. The same theory applies to horizontal shift. The
middle of the imag e is th e optical axis (0%), i.e. no shift. 100% shift equals half of the image height.

Vertical Lens Shift Formula
Vertical shift = S creen Height x (Max. Lens S hift Vertical (%) ÷ 2) ÷ 100
If the screen is 1.2 m eters high and the v ertical lens offset value is +120% to +150% (min/max), then the vertical lens s hift will be
0.9 meters. This means that the (centre of the) image can be shifted up or down a max imum of 90 centimeters.
Calculation: 1.2 * (150÷2=75)75÷100=0.9
Horizontal Lens Shift Formula
Horizontal shift = Screen W idth x ( Max Lens Offset Horizontal (%) ÷ 2) ÷ 100
If the screen is 4.2 meters w ide and the horizontal lens offset value is +42%, then the horizontal lens sh ift will be 0.89 meters. This
means that the (centre of the) image can be shifted left or right by 89 centimeters.
Calculation: 4.2 * (42÷2=21)21÷100=.89
0% Lens Shi ft equ a ls on axi s (i.e. no shift). 1 0 0% Lens Sh ift equa ls half of ima ge height / width.
