13.2 Fail-Safe modes
High reliability is one of the main objectives of the Eclipse HX-Delta system
design. The following features of the system minimize the effects of a
component failure.
13.2.1 Dual power supplies
The Eclipse HX-Delta matrix includes two external power supply units. One
power supply unit can power an entire matrix; the second unit provides a
backup in case of an equipment failure.
In addition, the two supplies have separate IEC connectors to AC mains power,
and are designed for completely automatic and transparent changeover
between supplies in the event of a power failure on one of the AC branches.
To reduce the risk of electric shock, plug each of the power
cords to separate branch circuits with different service
ground.
The power supplies contain a health sensor that is connected to both an
audible alarm and a warning light, giving the system operator the necessary
forewarning to diagnose and correct any power anomalies while the system
remains operational.
If any individual power supply fails, an alarm can be issued to a remote
location to alert operators that part of a power supply has failed. The failure of
a single supply will issue an alarm, but the Eclipse HX-Delta system will
continue to operate normally, powered by the second supply.
The internal PSU assembly also has dual redundancy as a precaution against
failure.
