Removal and Replacement Procedures

Hot-Plug Fan
CAUTION: Do not attempt to remove and replace a fan as a hot-plug procedure unless the
fan zone is redundant. For more information, refer to the Compaq ProLiant DL380 Generation
2 Server Setup and Installation Guide.
To remove a fan:
1. Extend or remove the server from the rack. See the Preparation Procedures section in
this chapter.
2. Remove the access panel. See the Access Panel section in this chapter.
3. Identify if the fan zone is redundant:
a. If the fan zone is not fully populated, you must power down the server. See the
Powering Down the Server section in this chapter.
b. If the fan zone is fully populated, you can replace the failed fan without powering
down the server. Proceed with step 4.
4. Press the release lever on the side of the fan

5. Lift the fan

CAUTION: Do not operate the server for extended periods without the access panel.
Operating the server without the access panel results in improper airflow that can lead to
thermal damage.
IMPORTANT: For proper cooling, install fans in all primary fan locations. Refer to the
Compaq ProLiant DL380 Generation 2 Server Setup and Installation Guide.
Reverse steps 1 through 5 to replace a fan.
