willgeneratefriction.Thefrictionzoneiscalledtheowboundarylayer.

Airbubblesabsorbandreectthesoundenergy,andtheymayinworstcasesblockthe
soundtransmissionaltogether.
Theboundarylayerincreasesinthicknesswhenitbecomesturbulent.Theboundary
layeristhinintheforwardpartofthevesselhull,andincreasesasitmovesaft.The
thicknessdependsonshipsspeedandontheroughnessofthehull.Allobjectssticking
outfromthehull,ordentsinthehull,willdisturbtheowandwillincreasethethickness
oftheboundarylayer.Whentheowspeedishigh,theturbulencecanbeviolentenough
todestroytheintegrityofthewater.Smallvoidsorcavitiesinthewaterwilloccurand
thisiscalledcavitation.
Itisourexperiencethatawideandatbottom,witharisinganglelessthanaround13
degrees,ispronetogivingairproblemsforthetransducer.Inanycaseatransducer
locationintheforwardpartofthehullispreferredinordertominimisetheinuenceof
theboundarylayer.
