Low-Speed Encoder
4
The encoder uses a wide, black ribbon to print magnetic ink characters on
documents as they pass through your workstation.
When the ribbon runs out, you have to replace it.
If the ribbon tears or breaks, you must repair it.
This section shows you how to do both of these jobs.
Note: If you are changing the encoding ribbon more frequently while
processing the same amount of documents, it could be due to excessive
ribbon spacing (too much space between lines on the encoder ribbon).
A procedure which might eliminate excess spacing is described in the section
“Low-Speed Encoder”, in the chapter 3, “Cleaning the Transport”.
Replacing the Encoder
Ribbon

When the encoder ribbon needs to be replaced, your workstation stops
moving documents and displays a message on the workstation screen. When
you replace the encoder ribbon, you should also take the opportunity to clean
the metering roll, as it helps prevent ribbon failures that would take even
more time to fix. Go get some adhesive tape and a replacement encoder
ribbon, then follow these steps to clean the metering roll and install the
ribbon.
1 Swing the hinged encoder door up to the right until it stays open.
2 Pull the end of the ribbon off the empty feed spool. Then roll the last of
the ribbon onto the take-up spool (turn the take-up spool by hand).
3 Pull the used ribbon roll off the take-up spool. Discard the roll, but SET
THE SPOOL ASIDE.
