Figure 37: Examples of binning: in the figure above a 2x1
binning is performed, while in the figure below a 2x2 bin-
ning is applied.

ure above a 2x1 binning is performed.
6.2.3 Decimation
Decimation mode is used to discard pixels in order to obtain a sub-sampled image.
Decimation mode has some advantages, e.g. the increasing of the frame rate of the camera.
In Fig.39 are shown two examples of decimation: in the figure above a 2x1 decimation is per-
formed: only one pixel over two is considered, thus the resulting image has half of the initial hor-
izontal resolution; in the figure below a 4x1 decimation has been applied, so only one pixel over
four is acquired. Also in this case the resulting horizontal resolution has been reduced (by a factor
4).
In case of color sensors, Bayer filter must be taken into account: since adiacent pixels have different
chroma information, decimation is performed grouping pixels with alternate colors, as depicted in
Fig.40. In this way, chroma information is not affected by algorithm artifacts.
