11.1 SIMATIC memory card - overview
Introduction
The S7-1500 automation system uses a so-called SIMATIC memory card as the program
memory. The SIMATIC memory card is a preformatted memory card compatible with the
Windows file system. The memory card is available in different memory sizes and can be
used for the following purposes:
Transportable data carrier
Program card
Firmware update card
A commercially available SD card reader is required to write / read the SIMATIC memory
card with the programming device / PC. This allows, for example, files to be copied directly
to the SIMATIC memory card using the Windows Explorer.
A SIMATIC memory card is absolutely required in order to operate the CPU.
