E.3 Continuous Positive Airway Pressure
Mode
E.3.1 Definition
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP ) is a ventilation mode intended for
patients who are breathing spontaneously at a rate sufficient to meet their
ventilation requirements. During CPAP, the airway pressure remains above
ambient at all times, reducing the work of breathing.
E.3.2 Available Breath Types
Patient spontaneous and pressure support breaths can be delivered in this mode.
Mandatory breaths are not given (except manual breaths).
E.3.3 Description
Figure E-3 illustrates how breaths are delivered in this mode.
