Chapter 1: MRIdian® System Overview
1.13.1 Radioactive Source and Shielding
The MRIdian system has three shielding heads—one for each
60
Cobalt source. The shielding
heads are made of tungsten and depleted uranium encased in 300 series stainless steel.
Within each head there is a source drawer encased in a shuttle for additional protection.
1.13.2 Multi-leaf Collimator
Each shielding head has a beam-shaping multi-leaf collimator (MLC). Each leaf is doubly
focused so the leaf edges and the leaf ends project to within 1 mm of the source focus point.
The aperture on the source heads restricts the MLC field to a 27.3 cm square field at
radiotherapy isocenter.
1.14 Patient Communication System
The patient communication system consists of:
 Patient Headphones
 Treatment Room Speakers
 Treatment Room Microphones
 Flat-Panel Display Monitor
 Intercom
 Video Camera
 Squeeze Bulb
1.14.1 Patient Headphones
The patient headphones plug into the patient couch and can play music and are used to speak
with the patient.
