Chapter 2: Safety Information and
2.13 Effects of Antenna
Looped cables, such as RF coils, ECG lines, and patient monitoring
devices, show an exceptionally high capability of receiving RF
fields. The loops will function as r
eceive antennas and may warm
to levels leading to second or third degree skin burns.
Ensure that receive coil cables and any accessory cables do NOT create a loop.
Position the receive coil cable in a way which does not contact the patient’s skin.
Avoid placement of the patient’s body or extremities against the RF transmit coil surface.
Ensur
e there are no unconnected receive coils or electric cables present during
examinations.
MR w
orkers may also be exposed to heating caused by RF radiation. Exposure can be
minimized by staying inside the Treatment Control Room which is outside the 5 Gauss line.
