4.1 General
The VMI Vision System (VVS) is used to center breaker, carcass, and tread material before
application of the material to the Tire Building Machine (TBM) drums. For this function it is
connected to the TBM central controller (the PLC). From the PLC, VVS receives
commands, and VVS sends feedback on the centering result to the PLC.
With VVS it is possible to achieve a higher degree of accuracy compared to mechanical
guiding. VVS measures the position of the rubber material during transport from one
conveyor to another, and controls an actuator, via which the material is commanded to
a target position (in general: the material center line).
The following types of control algorithms are implemented in VVS:
Breaker algorithm (centering during transport).
With this algorithm, both width and length of the material are measured during transport
from a lateral movable conveyor to a lateral fixed conveyor belt. During the material
take-over the movable conveyor is controlled, so that the material runs to the fixed
conveyor in center position. The algorithm can handle centering of breaker leading and
trailing end tips.
An additional encoder is included, offering the choice between optimal centering quality
and optimal drum splice quality (matching breaker leading and trailing ends).
Carcass algorithm (centering after transport).
With this type of algorithm the material is measured during transport from a fixed
conveyor to a lateral movable conveyor. As soon as the material is measured and is
fully on the movable conveyor, the front conveyor is moved to the position where
material center and application drum center match. The system can control
PreAssembly (PA) and two BodyPly (BP) materials. It is detected when rubber
components are not properly on the conveyor.
Tread algorithm (centering during application on drum).
The Tread algorithm measures the material as it is transported from a fixed conveyor to
a lateral movable conveyor. After evaluation of the tread dimensions, the product is
applied onto the drum. During the application deviations in centering and length are
compensated by the lateral movement of the conveyor and the synchronization of
the conveyor and drum speeds.
All materials passing the cameras are width-monitored. If the width is out of tolerance of
a preset width, a message is sent to the TBM central controller.
For Statistical Process Control (SPC) purposes, the actual measured widths can be made
available in the PLC.
