4.2 System architecture
4.2.1 General
VVS consists of the following components:
Camera The line-scan camera is capturing material width and position
relative to a pre‑set center line. Depending on the material width to
be captured and mechanical possibilities, one or two cameras can be
used for one function.
Light source Per centering application, one LED bar is used. The material passes
between camera and light source, so that a light to dark edge can be
captured by the camera.
Actuator and
controller
Per conveyor an actuator drive with a controller is used to control the
lateral position of the conveyor belt.
VVS Controller The VVS controller runs the VVS Controller (VVSX) software.
VVSX continuously calculates the actual and set point material
positions and controls the actuator servo controllers.
CAN network All communication between VVS Controller and the camera and
actuator components runs via a 2-wire CAN network. The CAN
network connects the various devices in any following order.
PLC connection VVS connects to the PLC via an OPC network server on
the VVS Controller. Through the OPC server it is possible to
communicate with the PLC over an Ethernet connection.
PC connection
(VVSU)
The VVS User Interface (VVSU) software takes care of the support
functions like calibration, troubleshooting and logging.
VVSU communicates with VVSX and, in general, runs on a
maintenance Laptop PC.
4.2.2 Modular system
The layout of the VVS system is fully modular and can be configured for:
● Breaker centering (up to a maximum of 4 breakers)
● Carcass centering (maximum of 1 per VVS system) of different materials:
● Pre-Assembly (PA)
● Body-Ply 1 (BP1)
● Body-Ply 2 (BP2)
● Tread centering
The materials can be measured by one or two cameras, depending on the material width,
the accuracy needed, and the available mechanical possibilities. For special applications, it
can be configured so that one camera set monitors two breakers.
