12.13 PERFORMINGANDVIEWINGASPECTRUMANALYSIS–THESPECTRUM
SCREEN
ThisisonlyavailableifoptionH500isinstalledandonlyiftheXT2640isconfiguredforspectrumanalysisbytheMEASMODE
settingontheMEASCONFIGscreen.
NormallytheXT2640isusedforgeneralpoweranalysisandharmonicanalysispurposes,butinsomesituationsitmaybedesirable
toperformspectrumanalysisonthesignalsinsteadofharmonicanalysis.IfoptionH500isinstalled,thenthisispossibleinthe
XT2640.
Anexampleofthisisformeasuringdistortioninaccordancewithsomeavionicsspecificationswhichrequireaspectralanalysistobe
performedwith20Hzresolutionforfrequenciesupto150kHz(notethatthismaximumfrequencyrequiresWchanneltypesasitis
abovethe115kHzupperlimitforL,SorAchanneltypes).TheXT2640canbeconfiguredtomeasurethespectrumofallsignalsat
thesametimetothisrequirement.
Note:
SPECTRUMmodeisasingleVPAmode;onlyoneVPAcanbeusedinspectrumanalysismode.
YoudonothavetobeviewingtheSPECTRUMscreenforspectrumdatatobemeasured.
Whenconfiguredforspectrumanalysis,theXT2640stillperformsnormalpoweranalysis(unchanged)andalsoharmonic
analysis(butlimitedtothefundamentalcomponent).
TheXT2640isasinglemeasurementDFTbasedspectrumanalyzernota‘scanning’typespectrumanalyzer.Therearetwo
phasestoaspectrumanalysis–
MEASURING.Duringthisphaseallsignalsaresampledandthesesamplesarecollected.Thisphaseisoneperiod
oftheusersetresolutionfrequencyinlength(forexampleifthefrequencyresolutionissetfor1Hzthenthis
phasetakes1second).
PROCESSING.AftercollectingthesamplesduringtheMEASURINGphasetheXT2640thenprocessesthese
samplesbyDFTanalysistoproducethedesiredspectrum.Thereisnomeasurementbeingperformedfor
spectrumanalysisduringthisphase.Oncethisphaseiscompletedtheresultsareavailablefordisplay(or
exportingtoafile)andanewMEASURINGphaseisstarted.
ThereisonlyasingleMEASURINGsamplecollectionphaseandonlyasinglePROCESSINGphaseperspectrum
analysisupdatecycle.Theanalysisofeveryspectralpointanalyzedisperformedonthesamesetofsamplesinits
entiretysotherearenodiscontinuitiesintheanalyzedresults.
12.13.1 CONFIGURINGSPECTRUMANALYSIS

SettheOPERATINGMODEtoSPECTRUM

12.13.2 OPTIMISINGCONFIGURATION FOR SPECTRUMMEASUREMENTS
TheXT2640performsboththepoweranalysisandspectralanalysisatthesametime.Inmostcasesyoudonotneedtoconsiderthe
compromisesinvolvedinthis,butifyouwishtoperformspectrumanalysiswithafrequencyresolutionlessthantheinverseofthe
poweranalysismeasurementperiodthenitshouldbeconsideredwhethertooptimizeforthespectrumanalysisratherthanforthe
