securitybasedonv1andv2c).
SNMPadoptsthe“Managementprocess—Agentprocess”modelto
monitorandcontrolalltypesofmanagednetworkdevices.The
SNMPnetworkmanagementneedsthreekeyelements:
1.Manageddevices,whichcancommunicateovertheInternet.
Eachdevicecontainsanagent.
2.NMSThenetworkmanagementprocessshallbeabletocom-
municateovertheInternet.
3.Theprotocolusedfortheexchangeofmanagementinforma-
tionbetweentheswitchingagentprocessandtheNMS,that
is,SNMP .
AnNMScollectsdatabypollingtheagentsthatresideintheman-
ageddevices.Theagentsinthemanageddevicescanreporterrors
toNMSsatanytimebeforetheNMSspollthem.Theseerrorsare
calledtraps.Whenatrapoccurstoadevice,theNMScanbeused
toquerythedevice(supposeitisreachable)andobtainmoreinfor-
mation.Snmpv2candv3alsosupportinform(aSNMPv2Trapthat
needresponse)toinformabnormaleventstoNMS.Ifreceivesin-
formmessageNMSwillsendaacknowledgementpackettoswitch.
Ifswitchhasn’treceivedacknowledgementpacketfromNMSina
periodtimeitwillresendtheoriginalinformmessagetwice.
AllvariablesinthenetworkarestoredintheMIB.SNMPmonitors
networkdevicestatusbyqueryingtherelatedobjectvaluesinthe
agentMIB.ZXR102900implementsthestandardMIBandprivate
MIBdenedinrfc2233,rfc1493,rfc2665andrfc2819.
