General Operation
Using the Keyboard
Cancel Functions
To exit a menu or a setting screen without making changes, press the backspace key . When
pressing backspace in the middle of a function, you are walked out of the function a screen at a time.
You may have to press backspace several times to completely exit the function.
Using the Keyboard
The printer comes with a keyboard appropriate to the region where it was purchased. For information
on entering text in Asian languages, see Appendix B: “Using IME for Asian Text” on page 108.
Keys With Multiple Characters
White: Most keys on the printer have text or images in white. Press the key to perform the function or
type the character.
Orange: Some keys also have orange text in the upper right. For the orange function or character,
press the FN key and then press the key with orange.
Multiple: A few keys have three or four characters and you press either SHIFT or FN and then press
the key to get two of the characters.

The following tables provide a reference for all the keys that perform a function other than typing a
character.
To type the character in
the upper left, press
SHIFT and then press the
key.
To type the character in
the bottom left, just press
the key.
To type the orange
character in the lower right,
press FN and then press
the key. (Only available on
printers sold outside of
North America.)
To type the orange
character in the upper right,
press SHIFT and FN, and
then press the key.
