1.10 Denition of operator
The “Machinery Directive" (2006/42/EC and subsequent amendments) denes the term "OPERATOR” as ...the
person or persons installing, operating, adjusting, maintaining, cleaning, repairing or moving machinery”.
Depending on the task (transport, lifting, operation, maintenance, etc.), the operator must have a minimum level of
competence (qualication) in order to perform the required task safely.
The following table indicates the qualications of operators and the corresponding tasks:

Qualied technician capable of operating the machine under
normal conditions or with the guards disabled and of working
on mechanical parts for the purpose of making adjustments
and carrying out maintenance and repairs. Not qualied to
carry out any work on live electrical equipment.
Electrical
maintenance
technician

Qualied technician capable of operating the machine under
normal conditions or with the guards disabled and of working
on electrical parts for the purpose of making adjustments and
carrying out maintenance and repairs. Qualied to work on live
switchboards or junction boxes.
PLC programmer 3
Qualied technician capable of managing the PLC inside the
electrical control panel.
Manufacturer's
technician

Qualied technician provided by the Manufacturer to carry out
complex operations in particular situations and in any case
when agreed upon with the user.
