6.5.13 Alarms and Status Messages
Alarms are visual and audible. Alarm messages and tones alert the INVOS™ system operator of a
condition in the patient or the INVOS™ system requiring attention. Upon alarm, the operator
should check the patient’s condition first to determine the cause of alarm. Sensor attachment to
the patient, upper and lower alarm limits, battery capacity, and other messages that may appear
on the screen should be verified to validate the alarm condition.
Visual communication of parameter values and alarms is visible by an operator with 20/20 vision
(corrected as necessary) from a distance of 1 meter when the monitor is placed in an environment
with ambient light in the range of 100 to 1500 lux and the operator’s position is anywhere on or
within the base of a cone subtended by an angle of 30° normal to the center of the plane of
display of the monitor. Visual communication of parameter alarm priority is visible under the same
conditions from 4 meters.
