To Test The Water Fill System
Thewiringharnesshastwodiodesintheline
betweenthellswitchontheicemakerandthe
greencoilofthesecondarywatervalve,aswellas
betweenthewaterswitchorrelayonthefreezer
doorandthesecondaryvalve.Thediodesarepart
ofthewiringharness.(Seewiringdiagram,Figure
G10).
Ifthediodesfailopen,theprimaryvalvewillnot
openforiceand/orwaterdependingonwhatdiode
isopen.Theopendiodewillnotaffectthecoilon
thesecondaryvalve.Thesecondaryvalvewillopen
butiftheprimaryvalvedoesnotopen,youwillnot
supplywatertothesecondaryvalve.
Resistance Check
Totestthediodesyoucanuseanohmmeterwith
atleasta10Kohmorhigherscale.Takeareading
acrossthediode,thenreverseyourleadsandtake
anotherreading.Thediodeshouldcheck10times
higherinonedirectionthantheother.
Voltage Check
Youcanalsouseavoltmetertocheckthecircuit.
Connectavoltmetertothevalvecoiloftheprimary
valve,andconnectasecondvoltmetertothe
greencoilofthesecondaryvalve.Iftheproblem
iswiththeicemaker,ortheyellowcoilofthe
secondaryvalveiftheproblemiswiththewater
dispenser.
Digital Meter
Ifyouareusingagoodmeteryouwillreadbetween
0-10voltswithaopendiodeontheprimaryvalve,
andover90voltsatthesecondary.
Voltage Drop From Heater
Incheckingthevoltageonaicemakerll,you
mustkeepinmindthatthecoilsofthewatervalves
areinserieswiththeheaterontheicemaker.
Theresistanceoftheheaterwillcauseadropin
voltage.Example:Ifyouhave110-120voltsatthe
outletwiththeproductrunning,then92-101volts
willbepresentatthegreencoilofthesecondary
valve.
Valve Coil
Theproductionvalvesusea20wattcoiltoopen
thevalve.Thisshouldopenthevalvedown
toabout90voltsatthegreencoilofthesecondary
valve.Ifthevoltageislowerthan90butabove80,
youcaninstalla50wattservicecoil(PartNumber
5304401081).Keepinmind,youmustreplace
thecoilontheprimaryandthegreencoilonthe
secondaryvalvetoresolvetheproblem.
Voltage Readings are Different Between
Primary and Secondary Valve Coils
Ifyouaregetting10voltsorlessattheprimary
valve,butyouaregetting85-100atthesecondary,
youhaveabaddiode.Ifyouaregetting48-58
voltsattheprimaryvalveand90orhigheratthe
secondary,thisisnormal.Withthecurrentowing
totheprimaryvalvecoilthroughthediode,you
aregetting30cycleinsteadof60cyclecurrentat
thecoiloftheprimaryvalve.Becauseofthis,your
meterwillonlyreadabout1/2thevoltagethatis
goingtothecoil.
No Water at Door
Iftheicemakerisoperatingbutyoucannotget
wateroutthedoor,thetestandoperationofthe
diodeisthesameasfortheicemaker,except
forthevoltagereadings.Onthewaterside,you
shouldreadthesamevoltageatthecoilofthe
secondaryvalveasyouhaveattheoutlet.Onthe
primaryvalve,thevoltageshouldread60-70vac.
Ifthevoltageislowattheprimarybutgoodatthe
secondary,youhaveabaddiode.Ifthevoltage
islowatboththeprimaryandsecondary,you
haveabadconnectionorabadswitchinthedoor
dispenser.
Diode Kit
Ifyouhaveaproblemwiththediodes,orderthe
diodekit(partnumber5303918287.SeeFigure
H8.)Thediodesarepartofthewiringharnessfor
themachinecompartment.
Checking Water
Ifyoudoyourvoltagechecksandndyouhave
thecorrectvoltageatthecoilsandthevalveisnot
lettingwaterthrough,replacethevalve.Tosee
whichvalveisbad,disconnectthewaterlinefrom
theltertotheinletofthesecondaryvalve.Place
thelineinabucket.
Ice Maker Valve
Runtheicemakerthroughallcycleandseeif
waterwillpassthroughthevalve(Green Coil)
andthelterintoabucket.Ifitdoes,replacethe
secondaryvalve.Ifitdoesnot,removetheprimary
valve,disconnecttheoutletlinefromtheprimary
valveandruntheicemakerthroughallcycle.If
thereisstillnowater,replacetheprimaryvalve.If
wateriscomingthrough,replacethewaterlter.
