Principals Of Automatic Defrost
Operation
Automaticdefrostrefrigeratorsoperateonthe
principlethatmoistureorfrosttransfersormigrates
tothecoldestsurfaces(evaporator)inthefreezer
compartment.Forexample,asmallamountof
waterspilledinthefreezercompartmentwillfreeze
immediately.However,thisiceintimewillevaporate
andtransfertothecoldersurfacesofthefreezer
evaporatorcoil.
Air Circulation Patterns
Automaticdefrostmodelshaveasingle
evaporatorinthefreezercompartment,andhave
forcedaircoolinginthefreezerandrefrigerator
compartments.
The“nandtube”aluminumtypeevaporatoris
locatedbehindthelowerbackwallofthefreezer
compartment.Acirculatingfan(suctiontype)
pullsairfromthefreezercompartmentthrough
thegrillinthebottomofthefreezerandfromthe
refrigeratorcompartmentthroughaductlocated
intheseparatingwallinthebottomrearlefthand
cornerofthecabinetinterior.Theairisthandrawn
upthroughthenandtubesoftheevaporator
surface.Thecoldairisforcedintoafancoverand
dischargedintothetopofthefreezerandoutthe
airdischargeundertheicemaker.FigureD1.The
aircirculatingfanoperatesanytimethethermistors
sensethetemperatureofthefoodcompartment
orthefreezercompartmentareabovetheupper
controllimitandsendtheinformationtothelower
controlboard.Ifthefoodcompartmentiscallingfor
coolingtheautomaticdamperinthetopofthefood
compartmentwillopenandallowcoldairtoenter
thefoodcompartment.Ifthefoodcompartment
callsforcoolingbutthefanisnotrunning,thefan
willstartissoonasthedamperisopenandwill
continuetorunaslongasthefoodcompartment
and/orthefreezercompartmentcallforcooling.
Theaircirculatingfana12VDCfanmotor
operatesanytimethefoodcompartmentorthe
freezercompartmentcallforcooling.Duringthe
defrostperiod,thecompressorandcirculatingfan
donotoperate.Thepowerboardlocatedunderthe
freezerbehindthegrillopenstheelectricalcircuitto
thefanmotorandcompressorforthedefrostcycle.
Thelowercontrolboardalsoclosesthedamper
doorthatiscontrolledbya12VDCsteppermotor
