Installing a New Compressor
NOTE
Toushevaporatorandheatexchangeryou
mustremoveevaporatorfrominsideproductto
disconnectcaptube.
NOTE
Entirelynewcompressorshavebeendeveloped
forusewithR-134aandEsteroilrefrigeration
systems.Bothcompressorandelectricmotor
havebeenmodied.Oldcompressorsintended
forR-12refrigerantmustnotbeusedfornew
systemschargedwithR-134a.
Replacementofcompressorandinstallationof
lter-driermustbedoneinacontinuoussequence
sosystemisexposedtoatmospherenolonger
thannecessary.
Allreplacementcompressorsareshippedwith
rubberplugsinthesuction,dischargeandprocess
tubesandcontainthecorrectoilchargeanda
holdingchargeofinertgas.Compressorshavea
low-sideprocesstubeattachedtothecompressor
shell.Ahigh-sideprocesstubeisattachedtothe
lter-drier.
WARNING
Do not operate reciprocating compressor
when charging liquid refrigerant into system
through its process tube.
Replacementcompressorsforrefrigeratormay
haveanoilcoolereveniftheoriginalcompressor
didnot.Iftheproductisnotequippedforanoil
cooler,leavetheplasticcapsinplaceandinstall
thecompressorconnectingonlytothesuctionand
dischargelinesofthenewcompressor.
Beforeinstallingthereplacementcompressor
removethedischargeplugandcheckforthepop
soundoftheinertgasleavingthecompressor.
IfthecompressorchecksOK,reinstalltheplug.
Donotremoveanyoftheplugsagainuntilthe
compressorisinpositionandyouarereadyto
brazethelines.
CAUTION
DO NOT use compressor if you do not
hear this sound.
CAUTION
On R-134a systems, compressor must NOT
be left open to atmosphere for more than 10
minutes to prevent moisture contamination of
oil.
Anewcompressorwhichiscold(e.g.afterhaving
beenkeptinacoldservicevan)shouldbeleftto
warmtothesurroundingtemperaturebeforethe
plugsonthecompressorconnectionsareremoved.
Thiswillhelppreventcondensationfromformingin
theoilandthecompressor.Also,avoidopeningthe
systemwhenanyofthecomponentsorlinesare
cold.
NOTE
Releaseholdingcharge(releaseslowlytoavoid
oildischarge)onnewcompressortoensurethere
isnoleakinseamortubing.Reinstallrubberplug.
1. Disconnectelectricalsupplytorefrigerator.
2. Removecompressoraccesspanel.
3. RecoverrefrigerantbyusingEPAapproved
recoverysystem.
4. Removecondenserfanmountingscrews.
5. Unplugfanmotorharnesslocatedinbackof
fanmotor.
6. Removefanmotorandfanblade.
7. Removeleadsfromcompressormotor
terminals.
8. Removemountingclipsandwashers.
