2.3 Concepts
2.3.1 SLAM
SLAM technology allows you to generate a map of an unknown environment, while simultaneously
estimating Hovermap’s location within that environment. Hovermap uses a LiDAR-based SLAM
algorithm that relies on distinct geometric features in the environment to align the sensor’s range data
with the sensor data that it has already collected. This process builds a map, often referred to as a
registered point cloud, and is used to estimate Hovermap's trajectory within that map.
Hovermap uses SLAM technology for both mapping and autonomous navigation.
2.3.1.1 Capabilities
No need for external infrastructure (for example, GPS)
Works outdoors, indoors, and underground
Easy to set up
Rapid deployment
2.3.1.2 Limitations
Needs 3D features for scan matching
Accumulates drift
Environment-dependent
Note
The more features that Hovermap can see repeatedly (at different distances and
angles), the more accurate and more robust the navigation and map will be.
