z Congestion management handles resource competition during network congestion.
Generally, it assigns packets to queues first, and then forwards the packets by using a
scheduling algorithm. Congestion management is usually applied in the outbound
direction of a port.
z Congestion avoidance monitors the use of network resources and drops packets
actively when congestion reaches a certain degree. It relieves network load by
adjusting traffic size. Congestion avoidance is usually applied in the outbound
direction of a port.
Among these QoS technologies, traffic classification is the foundation for providing
differentiated services by classifying packets with certain match criteria. Traffic policing,
traffic shaping, congestion management, and congestion avoidance manage network
traffic and resources in different ways to realize differentiated services.
QoS Features Supported by the S5100 Series Ethernet
Switches
The S5100 series Ethernet switches support the QoS features listed in Table 1-1:
Table 1-1 QoS features supported by the S5100 series Ethernet switches
QoS Feature Description Reference
Traffic
classification
Classify incoming traffic based on
ACLs. The S5100 series support
the following types of ACLs:
z Basic ACLs
z Advanced ACLs
z Layer 2 ACLs (not available on
Release2201 or any earlier
releases of the SS5100-SI)
z For information about ACLs,
refer to the ACL Operation and
ACL Command manuals.
z For information about traffic
classification, refer to
Traffic
Classification
.
QoS actions
The S5100 series support
performing the following QoS
actions on traffic matching the
specified ACL:
z Priority marking (available only
on the S5100-EI)
z Traffic policing (available only
on the S5100-EI)
z Traffic shaping (available only
on the S5100-EI)
z Traffic redirecting (available
only on the S5100-EI)
z VLAN mapping (available only
on the S5100-EI)
z Traffic accounting (available
only on the S5100-EI)
z Traffic mirroring (available only
on the S5100-EI)
