Appendix B Cooling System Help
B.1 Coolant and Water Recommendations
The cooling loop uses a 50% mixture by volume of deionized water and industrial grade
ethylene glycol. The recommended ethylene glycol product is called “Ucartherm”,
made by Union Carbide.
Equivalent coolants from another manufacturer may be used as long as its inhibitors are
similar. Also, information on the properties of the product must be obtained from the
manufacturer in order to calculate the transmitter power output calorimetrically.
Caution
DO NOT USE AUTOMOTIVE GRADE ANTI-FREEZE AS A SUBSTITUTION FOR
INDUSTRIAL GRADE GLYCOL. IT DOES NOT CONTAIN THE PROPER INHIBITORS
FOR THIS APPLICATION AND WILL LEAD TO EVENTUAL DAMAGE OF THE
SYSTEM.
