Grid Sequence function
What is the Grid Sequence function?
Thegridsequencefunctionletsyoucreatephrases
suchasdrumpatternsbyenteringnotesonagrid.
Evenifyourenotcomfortablerecordingthedrums
fromakeyboard,thismethodallowsyoutoeasily
createdrumpatterns.
What is the grid?
Let’sthinkofan8beatmeasureasanemptygrid.First
we’lluseverticallinestoindicateeachofthe8thnotes.
Sinceourexamplehasonemeasure,we’lldraweight
verticallines.
Nextwe’llusehorizontallinestoindicatethenote
numbers(differentinstrumentalsounds).Sincewe re
goingtousefourdruminst
ruments,we’
lldrawfour
horizontallines.
Wellusea“+”symboltoindicateeachintersection
betweenaverticalandhorizontalline.Each“+”
symbolindicatesagridlocation.Thefollowing
illustrationshowsanemptygridforone8beat
measure.
Inourexample,we’llusethisgridtoenterthe8beat
onemeasuredrumpattern
shownbelow.
Theillustrationbelowshowshowwecanusethegrid
todepictthis8beatdrumpattern.Thesymbol
indicatesagridlocationatwhichthecorresponding
druminstrumentisheard.
YoucanusethemicroSTATION’sgridsequence
functiontocreatethispatternbyturningthe“+”
location
soffandthelocationson.
Youllusethefunction01–16buttonsandfunction01–
16LEDstomakegridsettings.Youcanusethe
function01–16buttonstospecifyasequenceofupto
64gridsteps.Forexamplewitha4/4timesignature
andan8beatrhythm,thisle
tsyoucreateapatternup
toeightmeasureslong.Witha4/4timesignatureanda
16beatrhythm,thepatterncanbeuptofourmeasures
long.
Recording with the Grid Sequence
function
Let’susetheGridSequencefunctiontocreateasimple
drumpattern.
Note: WhenyourecordusingtheGridSequence
function,eachnote’svelocityvalueandduration(note
length)arerecordedatafixedvaluespecifiedby“Init
Veland“InitDurrespectively.Ifyouwanttocreate
changesinthesevalues,you’llneedtoeditthemafter
recording.
Youcan’tusetheGridSeque n cefu nct iontoturna
gridnoteon/offwhileasongisplayingor being
recorded.Youmustfirststopplaybackor
recording.

3. PresstheGRIDSEQfunction.
TheGridSequencefunctionwillturnon.TheLED
locatedattheupperleftoftheGRIDSEQbutton
andtheGRIDSEQLEDlocatedattheleftofthe
functionLEDswilllightup.
WhentheGridSequencefunctionisturnedon,the
Loopfunctionwillturnon.
Note: TheLOOPbuttonwillnotlightupwhenthe
GridSequencefunctionturnson.Whenyouexitthe
GridSequencefunction,Loopwillremainon,and
theLOOPbuttonwilllightup.
WhentheGridSequencefunctionturnson,the
displaywillshowascreenthatletsyouspecifythe
measuresoverwhichtheloo
pwillrepeat,andthe
quantizationsetting(“LpEnd”and“Q”).
Forthisexample,set“LpEnd”to002.
Bydefault,theloopsettingwillbetheloopsetting
(“LoopM******”)thatwasspecifiedwhenyou
turnedtheLoopfunctionon.Ifyouwanttochange
theloopsta
rtmeasure,turnofftheGridSeque
nce
functionanduse“LoopM******”tochangethe
setting.
Themeasuresthatwillbeloopedcanbe
changedintheGridSequencefunctionsettingscreen.
Bydefault,thetimesignaturesetting(“TS”)willbe
thesettingofthesong.Ifyouwanttochangethis,
