SoftwareDownloadcanbeaccomplishedintwoways:
•CentralizedSoftwareDownloadisaNetworkManagementapplicationthatallowsyoutotransferand
installapplicationsoftwarefromacentralizedlocation.Thesoftwaredownloadapplicationresidesonthe
NetworkManagementClientPCandaPCloadedwiththeCongurationServiceSoftware(CSS)application.
FromeitherofthePCs,youcanselectdevicetypestowhichtodownloadsoftware.CentralizedSoftware
Downloadallowsyoutoselectthezone,site,devicetypes,andsoftwaredownloadoperationtoperform.
•OfineSoftwareDownloadallowsyoutotransferandinstallsoftwaretoasingleinstanceofadevice(such
asonebaseradio)thathasbeendisconnectedfromtheradionetwork.Thisfeaturegivesself-maintained
organizationstheabilitytoinstalldifferentversionsofsoftware.Y ourorganizationcanalsotestalignment
andeld-replaceableunits(FRUs)onadevicethatisnotapartoftheradionetwork.Singledevicesoftware
downloadisdonefromaPCloadedwiththeCSSapplication.
Conventionaldevicesaresupportedonlyinthesingledevicemode.
SWDLtransfersandinstallssoftwaretotheGCP8000SiteControllersthroughadirectconnectiontotheEthernet
serviceport.FortheGCM8000Comparator,SWDLtransfersandinstallssoftwareonlythroughthenetworkLAN
switch.WhenSWDLisconnectedfromacentralremotelocation,SWDLperformsacentralizedsoftwaredownload
tothesitecontrollersorRDMs,,thentothecomparatorsandbaseradiosinstalledatthesite.Bothactiveandstandby
sitecontrollerorRDMmoduleshavetwomemorybanksforloadingandrunningsoftware.Onebankisactive
whiletheotherbankisinactive.ThetransferofthesoftwareusingSWDLisabackgroundprocessthatloadsthe
softwareintotheinactivebank.ThesitecontrollerorRDMexecutesthesoftwareinonebank,whilesoftwareis
simultaneouslydownloadedtotheinactivebank.Thisisdoneinthebackgroundwithoutinterruptionofservicesat
thesite.Aninstallcausesthesitecontrollertoresetandactivatesthebanktorunwiththenewsoftware.
•Whenperformingacentralizedsoftwaredownload,thesitecontrollerorRDMcoordinatesthe
softwaretransferandinstallsthesoftwaretoallbaseradiosandcomparatorsinstalledatthesite.
•Acentralizedsoftwaredownloadcanonlybeperformedonatrunkedsystem.
SWDLcommunicateswiththesitecontrollerorRDMtodeterminethenumberofexistingremotesitesandthe
numberofchannels.SWDLconsidersachannelorremotesitetobeaccessibleifitsstatusis“NotUncongured.”
ThismeansthatthesitemustbesetupwithaPCwithCSSoranetworkmanagementclientbeforesoftware
downloadisperformedonthesite.
ThesystemdownloadssoftwaretothesitecontrollersorRDMs,comparators,andbaseradiosasaunit.UseSWDL
totransfersoftwaretoeachdevicetype,thenperformaninstalloperation.Duringthetransfer,theoperation
designatesaproxyforeachdevicetypeateachLAN.SitecontrollersorRDMsproxyforcomparatorsandbaseradios
proxyforeachother.Theproxycross-transfersthesoftwaretootherdevicesontheLAN.Usingproxiesminimizes
systemdowntime.TransferstotheLANaredonesimultaneouslyexceptforthesitecontrollerandcomparators.
Softwareinstallationisdoneonachannelbychannelbasis,startingwiththehighestnumberchannel.When
achannelsoftwaredownloadoccurs,thebaseradiowhichincorporatesthatchannelisprocessedalongwiththe
comparatorforthatchannel.Forexample,ifchannel3wasbeingdownloaded,thencomparator3andthebase
radiosforchannel3ateachoftheremotesiteswouldbeinstalledsimultaneously.
