6 Project configuration
6.1 Maintaining the safety distance
6.1.1 General
} The minimum distance from the start of the area protected by the safety laser scanner to
the dangerous machine component should be such that the operator cannot reach the
danger zone until the movement of the dangerous machine component has stopped.
} All distance specifications and measured values refer to the mirror's rotation axis [1].
Influencing factors in accordance with ENISO13855
} Overall response time of the safety laser scanner
Time between the response of the safety laser beam to an event and the change of the
OSSDs to the OFF state (see Calculating the overall response time [ 43]).
} Machine's stopping time
Interval between the change of the OSSD to the OFF state and the stopping of the haz-
ardous machine movement (including the reaction time of the connected evaluation
device)
} Approach speed
The speed with which the object to be detected is nearing the danger zone in mm/s
} Direction of approach
– Orthogonal = vertical application
The object to be detected approaches the danger zone at a right angle to the danger
zone.
– Horizontal = horizontal application
The object to be detected approaches the danger zone in parallel to the danger zone.
} Reflection of the ambient light
} Prevent stepping behind/circumvention of the protective equipment and, if necessary, the
resulting additions
– Height of the scan plane
– Detection capability
– Switchover times
