Within the framework of Totally Integrated Automation (TIA), PROFINET is a consistent
continuation of:
• PROFIBUS DP, the established eldbus
• Industrial Ethernet, the communication bus for the cell level
Experiences from both systems have been and are being integrated in PROFINET.
PROFINET IO controller
Device via which the connected IO devices are addressed. The IO controller exchanges input and
output signals with assigned eld devices. The IO controller is often the controller on which the
automation program runs.
PROFINET IO device
Distributed eld device assigned to one of the IO controllers.
Reading data

automation systems.

high availability automation systems is to reduce production downtime.
