SNMPOverview
TheSNMPisthemostpopularnetworkmanagementprotocolcurrently.Itinvolvesaseries
ofprotocolsandspecications:
lMIB:ManagementInformationBase
lSMI:StructureofManagementInformation
lSNMP:SimpleNetworkManagementProtocol
Theyofferthemeanstocollectnetworkmanagementinformationfromnetwork
devices.TheSNMPalsoenablesthedevicestoreportproblemsanderrorstoNetwork
ManagementSystems(NMSs).AnynetworkadministratorcanusetheSNMPtomanage
theswitch.TheZXR102900EsupportsSNMPv1,v2candv3(v3strengthensSNMP
managementsecuritybasedonv1andv2c).
TheSNMPusesthe“Managementprocess–Agentprocess”modeltomonitorandcontrol
alltypesofmanagednetworkdevices.TheSNMPnetworkmanagementneedsthreekey
elements:
1.Manageddevices.TheycancommunicateovertheInternet.Eachdevicecontainsan
agent.
2.NMS.Thenetworkmanagementprocessshouldbeabletocommunicateoverthe
Internet.
3.Theprotocolusedtoexchangemanagementinformationbetweentheagentprocess
andtheNMS,thatis,theSNMP .
TheNMSscollectdatabypollingtheagentsthatresideinthemanageddevices.The
agentsinthemanageddevicescanreporterrorstoNMSsatanytimebeforetheNMSs
pollthem.Theseerrorsarecalledtraps.Whenatrapoccursonadevice,theNMSscan
beusedtoquerythedevice(supposeitisreachable)andobtainmoreinformation.SNMP
v2candv3alsosupportaninformmessage(anSNMPv2Trapthatneedsaresponse)
toinformabnormaleventstotheNMSs.AfteranNMSreceivestheinformmessage,
itsendsanacknowledgementmessagetotheswitch.Iftheswitchdoesnotreceive
theacknowledgementmessagefromtheNMSinaperiod,itresendstheoriginalinform
messagetwice.
AllvariablesinthenetworkarestoredinMIBs.TheSNMPmonitorsthenetworkdevice
statusbyqueryingtherelatedobjectvaluesintheagentMIBs.
