5.7IGMPSnoopingConguration
IGMPSnoopingOverview
Becausethemulticastaddressisnotinthesourceaddressofthepacket,theswitchcannot
learnthemulticastaddress.Whentheswitchreceivesamulticastmessage,itsendsthe
messagetoalltheportsinthesameVLAN.Ifnomeasureistaken,unwantedmulticast
messagesmaybespreadtoeachnodeofthenetwork,causingagreatwasteofnetwork
bandwidthresource.
WiththeIGMPSnoopingfunction,theIGMPcommunicationbetweenthehostandrouter
issnooped,sothatthemulticastpacketsaresenttotheportsinthemulticastforwarding
table,insteadofallports.ThisrestrictstheoodingofmulticastmessagesintheLAN
switch,reducesthewasteofnetworkbandwidth,andimprovestheutilizationrateofthe
switch.
