SMOKE ALARM RECOMMENDED LOCATIONS
NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION STANDARD #72 FOR ALARM
LOCATIONS
2‐1.1.1SmokedetectorsusedwiththissystemshouldbeinstalledinaccordancewithChapter2ofthe
NationalFireAlarmCode,ANSI/NFPA72(NationalFireProtectionAssociation,BatterymarchPark,Quincy,
MA02269)whichreadsasfollows:
2‐1.1.2Smokealarmsshallbeinstalledoutsideofeachseparatesleepingareaintheim
mediatevici
nityof
thebedroomsandoneachadditionalstoryofthefamilylivingunitincludingbasementsandexcludingcrawl
spacesandunfinishedattics.Innewconstruction,asmokealarmshallbeinstalledineachsleepingroom.
Forfamilylivingunitswithoneormoresplitlevels(i.e.,adjacentlevelswithlessthanonefullsto
ry
separationbetweenlevels),asmokealarmshallsufficeforanadjacentlowerlevel,includingbasements.
(Exception:Wherethereisaninterveningdoorbetweenonelevelandtheadjacentlowerlevel,asmoke
alarmshallbeinstalledonthelowerlevel.)

tedsmokealarmsshouldbelocatedinthecenteroftheroomorhall,ornotlessthan4
inchesfromanywall.Whenthealarmismountedonawall,thetopofthealarmshouldbe4to12
inchesfromtheceiling.

lsmokealarmswherenormalambienttemperaturesareabove100°F(37.8°C),orbelow
40°F(4°C).Also,donotlocatealarminfrontofairconditioners,heatingregisters,orotherlocations
wherenormalaircirculationwillkeepsmokefromenteringthedetector.

tection:AreMoreSmokeAlarmsDesirable?Therequirednumberofsmokealarms
mightnotprovidereliableearlywarningprotectionforthoseareasseparatedbyadoorfromthearea s
protectedbytherequiredsmokealarms.Forthisreason,itisrecommendedthattheresidentialuser
considertheuseofa
dditionalsmokealarmsfo
rthoseareasforincreasedprotection.Theadditionalareas
includethebasement,bedrooms,diningroom,furnaceroom,utilityroom,andhallwaysnotprotectedby
therequiredsmokealarms.Theinstallationofsmokealarmsinkitchens,at tics(finishedorunfinished),or
garagesisnotnormallyrecommended,astheselo
cationsoccasio
nallyexperienceconditionsthatcanresult
inimproperoperationorfalsealarms.
NOTE: Smokealarmsarenottobeusedwithdetectorguardsunlessthecombinationhasbeen
evaluate dandfoundsuitableforthepurpose.
