Formatting the SATA Drive
To use the SATA drive, it must be formatted to FAT32. To format the SATA drive:
1. Open My Computer (in Windows, open Computer). This can be accessed via the
desktop shortcut or from the Start menu.
2. Insert the storage device that needs formatting.
3. Close the Autoplay window if it appears.
4. Close Windows Media Player and any other media players if they appear. Media players
will prevent the device from being formatted.
5. Right click the device that is to be formatted and select Format.
6. A format window should appear with several options.
a. The capacity should match the target device’s actual memory size.
b. The file system should be set to FAT32. DO NOT select NTFS, FAT, or exFAT.
c. The allocation unit size is automatic and should be left alone.
d. Volume Label is any name that can easily identify the storage device.
e. Deselect Quick Format for best results.
7. Select Start to begin the formatting process.
8. A prompt will ask again if the user wants to format the device. Select Ok.
9. Device formatting time will vary based on the transfer rate and capacity of the storage
device.
Reformatting of a storage device works well as a preventive measure. Be sure to
perform this procedure on any suspect devices.
Reformatting the storage device whenever it is connected to a PC for data retrieval is
recommended.
Be sure to select the correct drive when formatting to FAT32. Formatting the drive to
FAT32 will erase all data on that drive.
