Impact on a ship with bow thruster
If only the bow thruster is used in 3D-mode, there will be an
impact on lateral and turning maneuvers: The propulsions
normally run in opposite directions to shift laterally and turn the
ship. If one propulsion is not available, it is no longer possible to
compensate the thrusts. Normally, this would cause unwanted
movement towards ahead or astern.
W In such case, Marex 3D will interrupt the actuation of the
thrusters and limit the operability of the joystick to
longitudinal movements. You can move the ship ahead or
astern and have a remaining function on the joystick to stop
the ship for example. There will be no heading
compensation.
O Switch the joystick to thruster mode if you wish to use the
bow thruster.
10.4.2 Thruster failure in 3D-mode
If a thruster does not work, the impact on the 3D-mode and the
reaction of the ship depends on the available drives. A frequent
cause for the shutdown of thrusters is thermal overload:
Marex 3D provides a monitoring function for thermal overload.
It is also able to process temperature warnings from alternative
thruster controls if those relay a corresponding signal to the
Marex 3D control unit.
If the temperature of a thruster becomes dangerously hot,
Marex 3D will alert the operator:
The THRUSTER LED will begin to flash. The ALARM LED will light
up in addition if the thruster ceases to operate. The LEDs switch
off as soon as the thruster has cooled down.
It depends on the individual thruster manufacturer which
thruster malfunctions are relayed to Marex3D. Operate the
thruster with care and be aware that there may be
malfunctions which do not trigger an alarm in Marex3D.
