Closing the clamshell mechanism
1. After clearing a paper jam, replacing the print head, or
the like, position the carriage in the area of the
mark on the ribbon frame.
2. While rotating the ribbon frame in the direction of D in
Figure 2-33, close the clamshell mechanism.

2.2.5 Ribbon Feed Mechanism
The ribbon feed mechanism consists of the parts shown in
Figure 2-34 and a ribbon cassette containing an endless
ribbon. The ribbon is fed automatically when the carriage
motor rotates.
Ribbon feed operation
If the carriage motor rotates in the reverse direction and the
carriage motor gear rotates in the direction of A, the
ribbon intermediate gear and planet gears 1 and 2 rotate
in the direction of B (due to the rotation of the intermedi-
ate transmission gear and the two transmission gears).
At this point, the ribbon drive plate moves in the direction of
C around the small ribbon intermediate gear in the center,
moving planet gear 2 until it engages with the ribbon
transmission gear.
Because the ribbon transmission gear and ribbon take-up
gear are always engaged, the ribbon take-up gear rotates
in the direction of D.
The ribbon feed roller and ribbon holder roller inside the
ribbon cassette, both of which are engaged with the ribbon
take-up set, then begin to rotate so that the ribbon is fed.
When the carriage motor rotates in the forward direction,
the carriage motor gear rotates in the direction of E,
causing the ribbon intermediate gear and planet gears 1
and 2 to rotate in the direction of F.
At this point, the ribbon drive plate moves in the direction of
G around the small ribbon intermediate gear in the center,
disengaging planet gear 2 from the ribbon transmission
gear.
Note that because this mechanism only moves the ribbon
in one direction, the ribbon is not fed when the motor rotates
in the forward direction.

2.2.6 Paper Roll Take-Up Mechanism
The paper roll take-up mechanism consists of the paper roll
supply and paper roll take-up component mechanisms.
Paper roll supply mechanism
The supply mechanism allows the paper roll to simply be
dropped in, and is formed as part of the case of the main
unit.
Two paper roll rollers are located in the bottom of the supply
mechanism, and the J paper guide roller is located in the
paper roll insertion side. These rollers reduce the load
when feeding out the paper roll.
