6.1 BIOS
The basic input output system (BIOS) is the most basic software loaded on a
computer hardware system. It provides an abstraction layer between the computer
hardware and the OS. It performs hardware initialization during the boot process
and provides runtime services for the OS and programs. Figure 6-1 shows the
BIOS position in a system.

The BIOS performs power-on self-test (POST), detects input/output devices,
identies boot devices, and initializes memory. The BIOS also provides ACPI and
hot swap. The BIOS is stored in the serial peripheral interface (SPI) ash memory.
