Machine Control
If you have previously used SSL’s G Series Computer, you will soon find that the J
Series machine control facilities provide a great deal more flexibility. In a basic
installation, the J Series Computer may simply control a single machine via a parallel
link, much in the same way as G Series. In more complex installations the computer
can control up to four machines as slaves, via either direct or serial control lines.
Basic setting up of machines is carried out via on-screen menus. In normal use,
machines can be selected on and off-line, and record armed, by using dedicated
machine enable buttons on the computer front panel.
When the system is booted up, the Default Project File will load the machine control
settings that have been saved to that file during system commissioning. When you
create a new project using the New Project function (see Section 2), the same settings
will be copied to the new project. As long as you have a single machine in use with the
system, and never hire in different machines, you can be happy in the knowledge that
the correct machine control settings will always be present even from system bootup.
The only thing you will need to do is match the desk timecode to the machine
timecode whenever you load a different tape (see Page 3-3).
If, however, you are controlling a number of different machines, or change the master
machine on a regular basis, you will need to have a basic understanding of the J Series
Computer’s machine control facilities.
