IMPORTANT NOTE: To extend the life of the battery, fully charge the battery prior to
installation. A system using solar panels may not fully charge the battery. Additionally, a fast
charge, which the solar panel cannot provide, will improve the life of the battery.
To recharge a battery, a quick charge will remove buildup in the battery much more
effectively than a trickle charge. A battery slowly drained by low light conditions on a solar-
charged system or sitting in storage will be less likely to recover than a battery that was
quickly discharged from a short. Store batteries in a cool environment for less drainage.
To replace the 12 Vdc battery:
Follow the procedures to backup device data and configuration as described in section 10.1
Preserve data and configuration.
Verify that the lithium battery backup is enabled, and that the lithium battery voltage level
is OK:
a. View the scrolling parameters on the LCD. Verify that the Lithium Backup? parameter
displays Yes. If it displays No, enable the Lithium backup. See 7.5 Enable real time
clock backup.
b. Verify that the LL battery alarm does not display on the LCD. Or, measure the lithium
battery to verify that it registers more than 3.0 V. If the lithium battery is low, see
section 10.7.2 Replace the lithium battery.
Open the enclosure door.
Remove battery compartment plate.
Disconnect charger and battery following the steps for battery mode in section 10.5.1
Remove power from the electronic board.
Remove the battery and battery cable from the battery compartment.
Put the new battery in place. Ensure that the battery terminals do not touch the metal
surfaces inside of the enclosure.
Connect battery cable to the new battery terminals (observing polarity).
Reconnect battery and charger following the steps for battery mode in section 10.5.2
Reconnect power to the electronic board.
Verify on the LCD that the controller's power-on sequence completes.
Reattach battery compartment plate.
10.7.2 Replace the lithium battery
The lithium battery maintains the operation of the real-time clock. It is important to monitor the state
of the battery to avoid interruption to the clock backup.
IMPORTANT NOTE: In contrast with previous device generations, the real-time clock
backup does not stop immediately after the battery stops working. The clock continues to
operate for 24 to 36 hours. Do not remove power when replacing the battery.
To replace the battery:
Open the enclosure door.
Locate the lithium battery on the bottom left-hand corner of the electronic board.
Remove the lithium battery cover from the battery bracket by inserting the blade of a
slotted screwdriver between the cover and the side of the bracket.
Grasp the battery on each side and pull from the bracket. The positive end of the battery is
at the bottom end of the bracket.
Insert the new lithium battery into the bracket with the positive end of the battery down.
Reinsert the battery cover.
10.7.3 Replace the XSeries
G5
electronic board
To replace the electronic board on an XSeries
G5
device or to upgrade an XSeries
G4
device with a
G5
board, refer to the XSeries
G5
Board Replacement Guide. When replacing boards on devices that are in
