Cavitation
Cavitationistheformationofsmallairbubbles
closetothetransducerface.Thebubblesappear
becausethelocalpressurebecomesnegative
duringpartsoftheacousticpressurecycles.
Thecavitationthresholdincreaseswiththe
hydrostaticpressure.Thenoiseismadewhen
thebubblesimplode.
Cavitationnoisemayappearnearextruding
objectsathigherspeeds,butmoreoftenitis
causedbythepropellers.Propellercavitationisaseveresourceofnoise.Thecavitation
startswhenthewaterowsinthesamedirectionasthepropellerblades.Thisiswhere
thepropellerbladesmovedownwards.
Insomecasesaresonantphenomenonissetupinaholenearthehull.Thissoundwill
haveadiscretefrequency,whileallotherownoisewillhaveawidefrequencyspectrum.

breakingwaves.Whenthehullmovesthroughwateritwillcauseadisturbance,andthis
willgeneratefriction.Thefrictionzoneiscalledtheowboundarylayer.Theowin
