Droppingthemicroprocessorduringinstallationorremovalcandamagethecontacts.
Donottouchthemicroprocessorcontacts;handlethemicroprocessorbytheedgesonly.Contaminants
onthemicroprocessorcontacts,suchasoilfromyourskin,cancauseconnectionfailuresbetween
thecontactsandthesocket.
Thepinsonthesocketsarefragile.Anydamagetothepinsmightrequirereplacingthesystemboard.

Ifyouarereplacingaservercomponentintheserver,youneedtoturnofftheserverandperipheraldevices,
anddisconnectthepowercordsandallexternalcables.
Toremoveamicroprocessorandheatsink,completethefollowingsteps.
Step1.Removethecover(see“Removingthecover”onpage131).
Step2.Removetheairbaffleifinstalled(see“Removingtheairbaffle”onpage135).
Step3.Removetheheatsink:
CAUTION:
Theheatsinkmaybecomeveryhotduringnormaloperation.Allowtimefortheheatsink
tocooldownbeforeyoutouchit.
a.Loosenthescrewsandalternateamongthescrewsuntiltheybreakthesealwiththe
microprocessor.
b.Pressfirmlyonthecaptivescrewsandloosenthemwithascrewdriver.
c.Useyourfingerstogentlypulltheheatsinkfromthemicroprocessor.

Step4.Lifttheheatsinkoutoftheserver.Afterremoval,placetheheatsinkonitssideonaclean,flat
surface.
Attention:Donottouchthethermalmaterialonthebottomoftheheatsink.Touchingthethermal
materialwillcontaminateit.Ifthethermalmaterialonthemicroprocessororheatsinkbecomes
contaminated,youmustwipeoffthecontaminatedthermalmaterialonthemicroprocessororheat
sinkwiththealcoholwipesandreapplycleanthermalgreasetotheheatsink.
