4.2 Outline
MICRO-VICKERS HARDNESS TESTING MACHINE can measure both Vickers hardness and
Knoop hardness (with special accessory of Knoop indenter used). Use of the Vickers indenter
allows for fracture toughness test.
Generally the Vickers hardness test can obtain constant hardness from the same quality of
materials regardless of how large the test force is according to its definition. The Vickers
hardness test can also be performed for from soft material to hard material continuously with the
same scale.
The Knoop hardness test provides a shallower indentation with a longer diagonal line in
comparison with the Vickers hardness test under the condition of the same force that is applied to
materials. Therefore, the Knoop hardness test is suitable for specimens to which large force
cannot be applied.
