FactorsThatCanAffectCuttingPerformance
Thereareanumberoffactorsthatcancontributetounsatisfactoryqualityofcut,
someofwhichmaybeturfconditions.Turfconditionssuchasexcessivethatch,
“sponginess”orattemptingtocutofftoomuchgrassheightmaynotalwaysbe
overcomebyadjustingthecuttingunit.Itisimportanttorememberthatthelower
theheight-of-cut,themorecriticalthesefactorsare.

information.

PossibleProblem/Correction
Tirepressure
Checktirepressureofalltractionunittires.Adjusttirepressureas
necessary(seetheTractionUnitOperatorsmanual).
GovernedenginespeedForbestcuttingperformanceandappearance,engineshouldberunat
maximumgovernedspeedduringmachineoperation.Checkmaximum
governedenginespeed.Adjustenginetospecicationsifnecessary.

4–1)inthismanual.
Reelspeed
Allcuttingreelsmustrotateatthesamespeed(within100rpm)(see
MowCircuitProblems(page3–4)).
Allcuttingunitsmusthaveequalbedknifetoreelandheight-of-cut
adjustments.
Makesurethatreelspeedselectioniscorrect(seeClipChartin
TractionUnitOperator’sManual).
Reelbearingcondition
Checkreelbearingsforwearandreplaceifnecessary.
SeeReelAssemblyService(page8–26).
BedknifetoreeladjustmentCheckbedknifetoreelcontactdaily.Thebedknifemusthavelight
contactacrosstheentirereel.Nocontactwilldullthecuttingedges.
Excessivecontactaccelerateswearofbothedges.Qualityofcutis
adverselyaffectedbybothconditions(seeBedknifetoReelAdjustment
intheCuttingUnitOperator’sManual).
Reelandbedknifesharpness
Note:Aftergrindingthereeland/orbedknife,check
thereeltobedknifecontactagainaftercuttingtwo
(2)fairways.Duringthisinitialuse,anyburrswill
beremovedfromreelandbedknifewhichmay
createimproperreeltobedknifeclearanceandthus
acceleratewear.Thispracticeofre-checkingthe
reeltobedknifecontactaftergrindingwillextend
thelongevityofthesharpnessoftheedgeofthe
reelandthebedknife.
Areeland/orbedknifethathasroundedcuttingedgesor“riing”
(groovedorwavyappearance)cannotbecorrectedbytighteningthe
bedknifetoreelcontact.Grindcuttingreeltoremovetaperand/or
riing.Grindbedknifetosharpenand/orremoveriing.
Themostcommoncauseofriingisbedknifetoreelcontactthat
istootight.
Dullcuttingedgesmustbecorrectedbygrindingthebedknifeand
cuttingreel(seePreparingtheReelforGrinding(page8–29)).
Anewbedknifemustbegroundat(within0.002”)after
installationtothebedbar.Backlappingmayberequiredto
properlymatethereelandbedknifeafterinstallationintothe
cuttingunit.
Note:Oncuttingunitsequippedwithoptionalbedknives,slightlydull
cuttingedgesmaybecorrectedbybacklapping(seeBacklappingin
theServiceandRepairssectionofthischapter).
RearrolleradjustmentAdjusttherearrollerbracketstocorrectpositiondependingonthe
height-of-cutrangeandaggressivenessofcutthatisdesired.
